Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 Enterprise Edition is acomprehensive, secure web gateway that helps protect organizations fromweb-based threats. It also delivers simple, unified perimeter securitywith integrated firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, malwareinspection, and URL filtering.

The Enterprise Edition provides increased scalability, access toa central management console, and complete support for virtualenvironments.

Most of the features of Forefront TMG — such as URL filteringand protection from spam and viruses — require a subscription toForefront TMG Web Protection Service to keep definitions current.Subscriptions are not currently donated and must be purchased fromMicrosoft at a list price of $12 a year per user or device.

Forefront TMG builds on the technologies of Internet Securityand Acceleration Server, which Microsoft no longer offers.Organizations with licenses for ISA whose Software Assurance wascurrent at the time of Forefront TMG's release can obtain it throughtheir Software Assurance benefit.

Licensing: This product is licensed under the processorlicensing model, with a license required for each physical or virtualprocessor accessed by an operating system environment running a TMGserver. This license does not require any device or user CALs.

Acquiring the Installation Media: To activate this product, you might need a volume licence key or setup code.

Features: 
  • Under the Software Assurance programme, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage. 
  • The Network Inspection System provides signature-based intrusion prevention for web-based threats seeking to exploit known vulnerabilities. Updates for NIS are included in the base server license.
  • A multilayer firewall provides access control and protection on three layers: packet filtering, stateful inspection, and application layer filtering.
  • Wizards allow quick configuration of remote access for both Outlook Web Access and SharePoint servers. Outlook Web Access users can be authenticated at the Forefront TMG server, preventing attacks by unauthenticated users.
  • The Forefront TMG Web Protection Service (requires separate subscription) draws on Microsoft Reputation Services, a centralized database of millions of web domains and pages maintained by Microsoft and several other partners.
