Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 Standard Edition is acomprehensive, secure web gateway that helps protect organizations fromweb-based threats. It also delivers simple, unified perimeter securitywith integrated firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, malwareinspection, and URL filtering.

Most of the features ofForefront TMG — such as URL filtering and protection from spam andviruses — require a subscription to Forefront TMG Web ProtectionService to keep definitions current. Subscriptions are not currentlydonated and must be purchased from Microsoft at a list price of $12 ayear per user or device.

Forefront TMG builds on thetechnologies of Internet Security and Acceleration Server, whichMicrosoft no longer offers. Organizations with licenses for ISA whoseSoftware Assurance was current at the time of Forefront TMG's releasecan obtain it through their Software Assurance benefit.

Licencing:This product is licensed under the processor licensing model, with alicense required for each physical or virtual processor accessed by anoperating system environment running a TMG server. This license doesnot require any device or user CALs.

Acquiring the Installation Media: To activate this product, you might need a volume licence key or setup code.

Features: 
  • Under the Software Assurance programme, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage. 
  • The Network Inspection System provides signature-based intrusion prevention for web-based threats seeking to exploit known vulnerabilities. Updates for NIS are included in the base server license.
  • A multilayer firewall provides access control and protection on three layers: packet filtering, stateful inspection, and application layer filtering.
  • Wizards allow quick configuration of remote access for both Outlook Web Access and SharePoint servers. Outlook Web Access users can be authenticated at the Forefront TMG server, preventing attacks by unauthenticated users.
  • The Forefront TMG Web Protection Service (requires separate subscription) draws on Microsoft Reputation Services, a centralized database of millions of web domains and pages maintained by Microsoft and several other partners.

  • 2.5 GB available hard-disk space formatted with the NTFS file system plus extra space required for caching or for temporarily storing files during malware inspection; second local hard disk recommended for caching web content
  • Network adapter compatible with the server operating system plus an additional network adapter for each network connected to the Forefront TMG server
  • DVD drive
