More than 300 Charities already on board with TechSoup New Zealand
|
TechSoup New Zealand has now been in operation since July 2008 and already has over 300 organisations registered. We would like to extend a warm welcolme to those organisations who have already jumped onboard to take advantage of New Zealand's unprecedented new technology donations programme. We also wish to thank those of you who have helped establish the TechSoup New Zealand brand by continually spreading the word and promoting this wonderful service to the sector which we know will increase the ICT capacity of many more charities in the future

| e-Engage Your Community mini-conference, Wellington 4 September |
You can now sign-up for a day’s learning experience, where using the web as an everyday business tool will be unmasked. Participants at the September 4 e-Engage Your Community mini-conference at Massey University’s Wellington Campus will learn from hands-on workshops, presentations and case studies as an introduction to online tools, web 2.0 and social networking—what an organisation now needs to survive in the information age.
A range of speakers with a wealth of knowledge about the web and it's use at the community and grass-roots level have been engaged to help and upskill organisations for taking the next step on the web. e-Engage Your Community organiser and Wellington ICT Director, Mike Rumble says "Many sector organisations—especially the smaller ones—know they should be using the web more, but they're often far too busy to seek out useful new tools themselves, or they may be daunted about the first steps they need to take.”
“We want to make it easier for people and provide them the opportunity to hear about new technologies, experiment with some of them, and in the process demystify some of the jargon and "techie" stuff that's often a barrier to us all."

Microsoft donates over $200,000 to New Zealand charities in first 6 weeks of operation
When TechSoup New Zealand officially launched in July 2008 our initial launch partner was Microsoft. After only 6 weeks in operation Microsoft has already donated products to over 20 organisations with a total retail value of over $200,000. TechSoup New Zealand would like to thank Microsoft for its kind support and recognise the contribution Microsoft makes in regards to ICT capacity building in the Charity and Voluntary sector in New Zealand.
Launch of the “New Zealand Non-Profit sector in comparative perspective” and the “History of the Non-Profit sector in New Zealand”
New Zealand is now part of the international comparative study of the non-profit sector undertaken by the Johns Hopkins University, which compares 41 countries across the world, and builds a very interesting picture of global non profit activity. The New Zealand data is based on the satellite accounts of the not for profit sector which was published last year.
Some very general comparisons for our sector in Aotearoa New Zealand:
- We have a large sector in terms of the non profit workforce (paid and unpaid) and proportion of GDP
- We have a large proportion of volunteers in our workforce
- The proportion of income from government is proportionally small
- We are about evenly split between ‘service’ and ‘expressive’ activities – which is unusual - only and only the Nordic group of countries have a higher ratio of expressive to service delivery
