Description:

Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 protects networked laptops, desktops, and servers ("endpoints") against viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, adware, rootkits, and threats not seen before ("zero-day attacks"). It consists of client software that runs on the endpoints and management software that runs on a server.

Symantec Endpoint Protection combines technologies from previous Symantec products in a new interface:

  • Antivirus and Antispyware: scans for both viruses and security risks
  • Personal Firewall: prevents unauthorized users from accessing the computers and the networks that connect to the Internet
  • Intrusion Prevention: acts as the client's second layer of defense after the firewall
  • Proactive Threat Scanning: analyzes the behavior of an application or process to determine if it exhibits characteristics of threats
  • Device Control: blocks or allows access from devices, such as USB, infrared, FireWire, SCSI, serial ports, and parallel ports
  • Application Control: blocks or allows applications that try to access system resources

The management software uses a single console to manage all the endpoints in an organization. Software and policy updates can be sent to all the organization's computers and servers, and their activities and statuses can be monitored centrally. Reports are available in web-based graphical form.

Rather than having several "agents" installed for the various functions, Endpoint Protection uses a single agent for all of them and thereby uses less memory and disk space on each endpoint.

Here are some notable features of this product:

  •  A rules-based firewall engine and Generic Exploit Blocking block malware before it can enter a system.
  • Proactive Threat Scan uses a technology unique to Symantec to score both good and bad behaviors of unknown applications, enhancing detection and reducing false positives without the need to create rule-based configurations.
  • Administrators can control access to specific processes, files, and folders by both users and applications.
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection works with other leading antivirus products, firewalls, IPS technologies, and network-access-control infrastructures. It also works with leading software-deployment tools, patch-management tools, and security-information-management tools.
