Methodist City Action
Methodist City Action's Computer school has an intake of over 3000 students per year. Some of these students have some
sort of physical or psychological disability, and some are Senior Citizens of
55 years of age and over.
Methodist City Action has a strong focus on the use of technology for an inclusive society. Their Microsoft Software Donations have had a great impact, as having access to the right technology improves their students self confidence and independence in learning.
Microsoft Windows and Office programs have showed their special significance among the students with visibility impairment and reading and speech disorder. The Accessibility Software in Windows 7, such as Screen Magnifier, Optical Character Recognition (Microsoft Office Document Scanning), On-Screen Keyboard, and the Narrator has given the students the opportunity to pursue their studies independently.
Microsoft InfoPath Application helps Methodist City Action's students to keep an online diary of their studies, which is electronically submitted and collated in a Microsoft Access Database that's available to the students at their next sessions of study in hard copy format.
Those students with disability, who did undergo training with Microsoft software application tools like Microsoft Word, or Microsoft Excel, have managed to use their skills to improve their employment conditions in terms of hours and pay, and pass their Drivers License test at the AA centre with flying colours.
Long time desire to communicate, be understood, and replied to accordingly, has made surfing the Internet and E-mail the knick-knack in the student's training.
"Microsoft Office has empowered students with a sense of inclusion in society and helped them to break out of seclusion and spark their interest in learning." says Kaveh Farbeh-Tabrizi, IT Administrator/Tutor
Uploading, editing, and printing photos from a digital camera and making a greeting card using Microsoft Publisher is a very popular topic among Methodist City Action's Senior Citizen students, which helps them to communicate with their grandchildren, wider family and friends.
