This session will look objectively at the technology developments that have occurred over the last 2 years which are transforming the not-for-profit landscape. Covering topics such as Cloud computing, workforce mobility, business intelligence and CRM, Tony will present a glimpse into the future with his view of the “modern not-for-profit”, combined with real world examples of how CEOs have already transformed their organisations through the use of technology.

2. Digital storytelling for not-for-profits
We all love great stories. Stories have the power to move minds and hearts, to create worlds and destroy them, and ultimately, to motivate our audiences and supporters to our actions and causes. In a fragmented media landscape, one where people-powered media has become a new standard of communication, the contest to get stories in front of audiences has never been more severe. But for those who can capitalise on these opportunities, there has never been more direct way to reach motivated groups of passionate supporters, ones who will see your cause succeed. In this enlightening and highly practical session, author, filmmaker and web designer Mikey Leung will help you elevate your art of digital storytelling, using free and open source software platforms, to reach audiences just around the corner or indeed, worldwide.

3. Strategic communications planning for not-for-profits 
In a crowded marketplace it’s especially valuable to have a clear message. As a not-for-profit your message is your promise. It sums up what you do and why it matters. Understanding your strategic communications goals is complex. Good communications don’t just happen. It’s a disciplined process that starts with an honest appraisal of your market position, successes and concerns. This presentation will take delegates through how to create a new strategic communications plan for their organisation and how to review profile, target audiences, perceptions, key messages and how to measure success.

4. Successfully navigating a communication campaign in the not-for-profit sector 
Our presentation would focus on creating a multi-channel campaign for not-for-profits encapsulating strategy development, public relations, partnership development, brand recognition, marketing, fundraising and advertising and would include effective methods of reporting. Our philosophy is that not-for-profits need to have a strategic approach to communication management to enable/enhance fundraising activities. If the community and your stakeholders don’t know about your organisation, brand or the need your organisations exists to serve, they are unable to support you or utilise your services. A successful campaign with effective reporting is essential for sponsorship development and retention.

6. Be networked, use measurement and make sense of your data
Not-for-profits are taking advantage of social media’s ability to facilitate and expand their impact by combining an organisational strategy with their professional online networks to connect, build relationships and establish trust and thought leadership. This way of operating goes beyond simply using tools like Facebook or Twitter and requires a networked mindset where openness and being ‘data-informed’ are essential. This interactive presentation will explore how not-for-profit leaders can improve their organisation’s social media use and embrace best practices of a networked not-for-profit, including measurement and learning, and avoiding some of the pitfalls and challenges.

7. The whole world in your hand: Embracing the mobile revolution
The mobile revolution is changing the way organisations work and interact with their audience. It adds another channel to the multi-channel world where our not-for-profits exist. This creates opportunities and changes the ways we can communicate, market, fundraise and provide services. This presentation will look at the range of effects that mobile connectivity has on the not-for-profit sector and examples of how organisations from Australia and abroad are learning about using mobile. It will also provide guidelines for approaching the integration of this global trend into your work.

8. How people-driven campaigns are changing the world
A rugby fan and father of two young boys forces the NRL to take a strong stand on violence against women by current players. A rural villager in India forces unprecedented attention on local village level corruption and a commitment from authorities to stamp it out. A Melbourne childcare worker mobilises hundreds of thousands of people globally forcing Lindt and Ferrero to commit to stamping out child labour in their supply chains. A 22-year-old man from Sydney brings Alan Jones - one of the most powerful people in national media - and his radio show to its knees in less than two weeks.

These are just some of the hundreds of examples of successfully people powered campaigns on Change.org - led not by organisations or political parties, but by individuals using the power of digital technology to catalyse and mobilise movements. In two short years Change.org has grown to more than 25 million users globally, and seen thousands of victories on local, national and international issues. I’ll share lessons on what’s lead to this amazing growth, and what can be learned by individuals and organisations from the new style of people powered online campaigning that is exploding around the world.

How can we effectively and efficiently communicate with our community online? Let’s try to help make life easier with some great online tools that help make managing multiple channels that little bit easier!

10. Free online tools to navigate your not-for-profit to success
Often short of staff, time and tight on budgets, as not-for-profits we are always on the lookout for new cost-effective ways to get things done — and you will find a real treasure trove of useful free tools online. We will be showing how to use lots of awesome free online tools to help your not-for-profit navigate your marketing, communication and social media strategies for maximum effect in the most cost effective way. They will include tools for online collaboration, social media administration and measurement, email marketing, mailing list management, events management, website analytics, photo editing, document management and more! We will be using practical, hands-on examples of how TRI and our clients use these tools: what, why and how.

11. Using social media to (re)engage about sexual health and build online communities 
For its recent social marketing campaign, The Big Picture, ACON Health developed the first large scale social media initiative in the Australian HIV sector to target gay men who account for ¾ of new HIV infections in NSW. This presentation will show how the social media campaign was developed and will explore the benefits of Facebook and Twitter, the challenges faced and the lessons learned, such as:

  • What posts or tweets worked and why
  • The impact of social media on traffic to the website Facebook reach and engagement
  • Twitter under performance and why
  • Implications on project planning, project management and resources for internal staff

12. Online crisis support and suicide prevention 
Lifeline has recently launched an Online Crisis Chat application with tremendous response and well received feedback. The system allows helpseekers to interact with professional, well-trained crisis supporters who assist individuals in keeping safe. The key initiative proposed by Lifeline's strategic vision of making 'Australia free of suicide'. The system is a classic example of how technology helps in enabling crisis support and ultimately suicide prevention.
